As tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East, a protester recently derails a speech given by U.S. President Joe Biden. The bipartisan rally, which was hosted by the Jewish Federation of metropolitan Detroit, was halted when an audible demand for the Biden administration to implement a cease fire in Gaza could be heard.
Easthaven, Michigan native, coy Schengen, could be heard during Biden’s speech shouting “no more bombing in Gaza”. Schengen, along with fellow protesters dressed in traditional Palestinian attire, were asked to leave the rally immediately.
Shortly after, Schengen issued a statement criticizing the Biden administration’s failure to implement a ceasefire declared by The United Nations Human Rights Council. In the statement, Schengen mentioned the heartbreaking deaths of hundreds of civilians in the violence while shamefully noting that The United States “tolerates Israeli aggression.”
The U.S. has yet to comment on the incident at The Detroit rally, however, several high-profile politicians from both parties, including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, have responded by calling for a ceasefire.
The violence between Palestinians and the Israeli Defense Force shows no signs of slowing down despite strong condemnations from the world’s leaders and top human rights activists. So far, the conflict has claimed the lives of at least 243 Palestinians, including 66 children. On the other hand, the Israeli military has reported the deaths of 13 of its citizens, including 2 children.
The Biden administration has finally been pushed to act on their promise to make the Middle East a priority. Still, we are reminded of the human toll and heartbreaking stories behind the rising death toll, making the protester’s message at the rally even more pertinent. With international attention on this crisis, here’s to hoping that an effective and long-lasting ceasefire is implemented soon.
