Belize recently announced that it will be suspending diplomatic ties with Israel over the ongoing conflict in Israel-Palestine. This announcement follows a week of intense fighting, with thousands of missiles launched on both sides, leaving hundreds of civilians dead and injured in the midst of the chaos.
The Foreign Minister of Belize, Wilfred Elrington, released a press statement expressing Belize’s deep concern over the recent escalations of violence between Israelis and Palestinians. In the statement, Minister Elrington called for a swift ceasefire agreement to restore peace in the region. He further stated that Belize had been attempting to help facilitate the peace process, however with no progress being made, the only option was to suspend diplomatic ties with Israel.
In addition to suspending diplomatic ties, Belize also announced that it will be withdrawing its citizens from the region. This includes both diplomats and members of the press who have been present to monitor and report on the conflict and its repercussions.
The Belizean government has expressed its hope that a permanent ceasefire agreement will be reached shortly. Until then, it has called on both sides to deescalate and for the international community to help put an end to this violent conflict.
The government of Belize is not alone in its stance. Many countries around the world have expressed outrage over the recent escalations of violence in Israel-Palestine. Such countries have stated their support for a just and lasting peace in the region and have urged both sides to come to the negotiating table to seek a peaceful resolution.
Although diplomatic ties between Belize and Israel have been suspended, Belize has made several appeals for the immediate ceasefire and restoration of peace in the region. It is hoped that the international community will heed Belize’s call and help put an end to the violence in the Middle East.
