Aaron Zebley, a key figure in the impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump, is running for Congress as a Democrat.
The announcement of Zebley’s candidacy marks a major shift in American politics, with the long-time government prosecutor entering the political arena and vying for office in the 2022 mid-term elections.
Zebley worked as a national security lawyer for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and special counsel Robert Mueller, where he was on the team that investigated Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and brought the now-infamous charges against Trump.
He also served as one of the leading lawyers that impeached Trump in the House Judiciary Committee, making statements as to why the President’s actions constituted impeachable offenses, particularly his role in sparking the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021.
Now, the 43-year-old Zebley has announced his move into the political arena, stating his intent to pursue a congressional seat in his home state of Virginia and pushing for his vision of progressive reform.
His campaign will focus on judicial reform, gun control, environmental protection, healthcare access and national security, as well as his commitment to challenge domination by special interests over politics.
Speaking to press, Zebley said “I grew up here and since then, my career has been devoted to living up to the ideals of protecting the rule of law and our democracy, which is under strain like never before.”
It is clear that Zebley’s decision to enter the political arena was significantly motivated by the events that occurred during Trump’s presidency.
While Zebley previously held a neutral role in his legal career, he is now making the transition from “lawyer to warrior” to fight for the values that he believes in and echo the demands of the American people. He is joining a long list of candidates who have risen up to run against the chaotic policies of the former president.
His announcement has been met with some surprise and a lot of excitement, given his prior record in defending law and justice.
His journey from special counsel to political candidate, all in the span of less than a year, marks an incredible journey and one that many will be sure to follow. Aaron Zebley’s decision to take his beliefs into the arena of politics has the potential to be a beacon of important reforms and progress in upcoming election cycles.
