House Democrat Anna Eshoo Announces She Will Not Seek Re-election
House Democrat Anna Eshoo announced Wednesday that she will not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives for California’s 18th Congressional District. Eshoo, who has held the seat for the last 28 years, is the second-longest tenured House Democrat, with 16 full terms in the House.
Eshoo’s statement read, “Serving the people of the 18th Congressional District has been the great honor and privilege of my life and I’m deeply grateful for that gift they have bestowed upon me. After much consideration and conversations with my family, I’ve decided it’s time to step aside and not seek re-election.”
Eshoo is credited with leading efforts to reforming finance and health care, fighting against foreign threats, and supporting the arts and sciences. She has also played a particularly instrumental role in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, introducing and supporting legislation that has secured financial aid for those affected by the virus.
Eshoo has earned widespread respect within the House of Representatives and will be remembered for her passion and dedication to helping the people of California. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer released a statement in response to Eshoo’s news, saying he was “deeply saddened” and he wished her well in her retirement.
The election for the 18th Congressional District in California will be held in November 2022 and the list of candidates vying for Eshoo’s seat is yet to be determined. She is in good company in stepping down in 2022 as six other California House Democrats have already announced their intentions not to seek re-election.
House Democrat Anna Eshoo is leaving behind a legacy of service and accomplishment that will be remembered for many years to come.
