In a highly unexpected move, Detroit resident and US Senate candidate Robert Patrick has come forward with a bold statement. In a recent interview, he claimed that he had been offered a staggering sum of $20 million to challenge current Representative Rashida Tlaib in the upcoming November election.
The offer caught Patrick off guard, as he had already decided to face off against another candidate, John James. Patrick refused the offer for ethical reasons and to honor his commitment to James.
“No matter how much money I was offered, it wasn’t enough to break my commitment to [John] James and the people of Michigan,” Patrick stated graciously.
Patrick also indicated that he had been contacted numerous times over the course of the last few months, suggesting that the major unnamed donor was actively looking for a suitable candidate to challenge Tlaib.
The current representative for Michigan’s 13th district, Tlaib has been a vocal advocate for progressive values since she was first elected in 2018. Having faced a slew of criticism from both sides of the aisle for her outspoken criticism of President Trump, Tlaib has become a controversial figure for some.
The situation has only been compounded by the fact that her expected opponent, Republican challenger John James, has been gathering considerable momentum in the polls.
In light of Patrick’s recent revelations, many are left wondering the identity of the unnamed donor, and whether or not he will find any other willing participants. Given the staggering amount offered, it is no surprise that some are skeptical of any ulterior motives.
Regardless of the outcome, the US Senate race in Michigan will surely be an interesting one to watch. Until then, Patrick’s selfless commitment to his word will no doubt leave a lasting impression with the citizens of Michigan, and the nation at large.
