In an unprecedented move, Russia has reportedly unleashed its biggest drone attack since the start of the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have confirmed that the attack was carried out by Russian drones targeting Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
The attack took place on Tuesday, with the drones reportedly launched from the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) – a region of eastern Ukraine that is controlled by Russian-backed militants. Sources on the Ukrainian side reported that around 20 drones were launched by Russian forces in the early hours of the morning, each loaded with explosives.
The attack caused significant damage to a Ukrainian military base in the city, and also hit a residential neighborhood in the city. There have been reports of civilian casualties, but the Ukrainian authorities have yet to confirm the exact number. The incident has also sparked fresh tensions between the two sides, and is being seen as a sign of Russia’s intent to further destabilize the region.
The Ukrainian Army has now launched an investigation into the incident, and has called on the international community to hold Russia accountable. There has also been an outcry from various human rights organizations which have called the attack a violation of international law.
The conflict in Ukraine has been ongoing since 2014 and has claimed the lives of more than 13,000 people. The situation has deteriorated even further with the latest drone attack on Kyiv, and it is likely to further escalate the situation in the region. With the international community yet to take a stand against Russia’s actions, it remains to be seen whether this latest violent action will be met with strong condemnation from the world.
