Brandon Witmer, a former Jaguars employee, has been arrested robbing the Jacksonville Jaguars for a luxury shopping spree worth $22 million. With the team’s financial records now in the hands of investigators, it appears that this was a complex crime involving complex fraud access and money laundering schemes. However, what stands out amongst the complexity of the crime is the extent of the defendant’s luxurious and extravagant spending habits.
According to reports, Witmer is accused of using this ill-gotten gain to purchase multiple luxury items including sports cars, jewelry, and designer clothes. He even took lavish vacations in Europe to further fuel his extravagant lifestyle. Of course, these are things few of us can relate to, but the ability to fund it with stolen money from an NFL team makes the crime even more remarkable.
This is an especially egregious form of theft as the money used to fund Witmer’s lavish habits was stolen from a franchise and its loyal fans. It is estimated that the Colts lost more than $30 million from their bank accounts as a consequence of this massive misappropriation of funds. With such a large sum of money going towards his own selfish gains, Witmer has undoubtedly caused a financial hardship for the franchise and its fans.
It is not yet known how Witmer was able to infiltrate the team’s financial accounts and steal this tremendous amount of money. What is known is that the Jacksonville Jaguars have filed a lawsuit against him in an effort to receive restitution from Witmer.
While this case is still making its way through the courts, one thing is for sure – Brandon Witmer’s extravagant lifestyle came at a steep price. His massive fraud has cost the Jacksonville Jaguars a significant amount of money and will serve as a reminder to sports fans everywhere that dishonest individuals will always find a way to capitalize on people’s trust.
