Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the ruler of oil-rich Kuwait, has passed away at the age of 86.
The ruling family of Kuwait announced the death of the Sheikh on Monday night. Born in 1933, he was the oldest son of Late Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s tenth ruler. Sheikh Nawaf ruled Kuwait for only two months, having assumed the role in September 2020 after his brother, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber passed away.
Sheikh Nawaf was known for being a wise leader and a great believer in unity and understanding among Kuwait’s diverse population. During his two months in office, Sheikh Nawaf had already been credited with alleviating tensions between different tribes and communities in Kuwait. He was also a progressive thinker who brought innovative ideas to the table in terms of Kuwait’s social and economic development.
As Kuwait’s ruler, Sheikh Nawaf typically adopted a peaceful approach to conflicts with neighboring countries. Bahrain, Syria and Saudi Arabia were some of the countries he sought to resolve his differences with through constructive dialogue and diplomatic initiatives.
Sheikh Nawaf’s legacy will undoubtedly live on for many generations to come. He was a man of great compassion and understanding and his presence will surely be missed by all in Kuwait. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the people of Kuwait during this time of mourning.
