The United Nations Special Envoy for the Middle East, Nickolay Mladenov, discussed the United States’ role in the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip during the UN Security Council on Tuesday.
Mladenov spoke specifically about the urgent need for aid in the impoverished Palestinian region, much of which has been paralyzed by a decade-long Israeli-Egyptian blockade. Taking direct aim at the US’ official policy within the region, Mladenov warned, “We have to anticipate the possible spillage of resources over to Hamas.”
The US had previously abstained from the council’s decision to address the worsening situation in the Gaza Strip, as they felt obligated to only express support for Israel as an ally. The UN envoy, however, appears to be imploring the Trump Administration to step up and take a more proactive role in the crisis, as its aid could prove to be an essential life-line for the Palestinian people living in Gaza.
The US, long known as a champion of human rights, has of late taken a more conservative approach to international diplomacy. The recent events in Gaza demonstrate the importance of a more assertive stance to protect those under siege, as well as act in a more humanitarian capacity.
At present, the region’s only lifeline continues to be provided by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, UNRWA. Recently, the Trump administration unilaterally stopped providing funding for the agency. This reduction in funding has put tremendous strain on an already vulnerable region and undermines the UN’s mission to provide relief and support to those most in need.
Mladenov also highlighted the current efforts being made to address issues of waste management in the Gaza Strip; the pressing crisis in Gaza is exacerbated by the increasingly dangerous impact of solid waste and raw sewage. Without proper infrastructure, there is an imminent risk of Health, Sanitation and Hygiene (HSH) issues, which could spur the spread of diseases.
These humanitarian concerns need to be acknowledged by the international community, especially the US, as their support and recognition could be instrumental in aiding the residents of Gaza. If the US does step in, they must remain mindful of not endorsing any organizations or governments in the area that Presidency has previously denounced. Nickolay Mladenov acknowledged the extremely delicate nature of the issue during the UN Security Council, alluding to the fact that Israel does not consider Hamas a legitimate entity, and that any US aid could have an adverse effect in the region.
The US must remain tactful in how it provides the necessary aid and support to the people of Gaza, while still assuring Israel that their security will not be violated. By doing so, they can make a lasting positive impact, and demonstrate their commitment to their core values.
