Early Sunday morning, a shooting in Winnipeg, Canada led to three fatalities and two critically injured victims.
The incident occurred around 2:40 am in the early hours near Marion Street and St. Matthews Avenue. Several people were standing outside and an argument ensued, leading to a man in the group shooting multiple rounds at individuals.
After police arrived at the scene, they discovered two men and one woman who were killed. Two other individuals were taken to hospital in critical condition while two further victims sustained minor injuries.
The shooter fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after by police in the area. He is currently in police custody pending charges in connection with homicide.
Police are investigating what cause the initial altercation and discrepancies between the accounts of those involved.
“This appears to be an isolated incident, but there is still much work to do,” said police representative Constable Rob Carver.
Speaking at the scene, honourary chief of a neighbourhood Marcus Young said, “This situation is very tragic; it’s sad and unfortunately, it’s the reality of life.”
The Winnipeg police are offering condolences to the families of those affected and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
Although isolated, this violent incident sparked shock and fear throughout Winnipeg as it was the deadliest shooting in the city’s history. The police are working to ensure the safety of all Winnipeg residents and that such tragedies are not allowed to happen again.
