John Kerry is a long-time public figure, serving as the United States’ Secretary of State from 2013-2017. As one of the country’s foremost diplomats, his climate change initiatives during his tenure are well known. However, it appears he is still dedicated to the cause, even after stepping down from his post.
Recently, Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin grilled Kerry in a GOP hearing for his frequent jet-setting around the world. The senator noted John Kerry’s “excessive travel schedule” while pointing out the irony of traveling on a large commercial plane for climate change conferences. His comments communicated the humorous yet important message that public figures setting an example for environmental responsibility need to lead by example.
Kerry responded with an infographic, noting that all of his plane trips since 2013 were offset of carbon emissions and conform to international standards. Kerry also acknowledged the criticism by stressing that there is no single way to “manage life” while serving an environmental purpose.
The heated exchange between the two politicians highlights the continuing debate over personal consumption and climate change. It also highlights the power imbalance between those in privileged positions, who are able to ignore or justify the negative effects of their actions on the environment, and those who are held accountable for the consequences.
John Kerry’s spokesperson clarified that his jet-setting is necessary to keep his climate change initiatives alive. Despite the fresh criticism, Kerry remains an important advocate for the cause, and his actions are in line with his beliefs.
It is clear that despite stepping down from his position as Secretary of State, he still remains committed to the fight against climate change, and will continue advocating for the preservation of the environment with the backing of like-minded politicians.
