Republican lawmakers are expecting a vote soon that would formalize the Democratic House of Representatives impeachment inquiry into U.S. President Joe Biden.
According to several Republicans in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, a majority of the GOP is expected to support the formal impeachment inquiry resolution, giving Democrats the necessary votes to pass the measure.
The resolution is expected to be introduced by Representatives Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Doug Collins (R-GA). It is believed to be similar to the resolution that was adopted by the House to initiate an impeachment inquiry into then-President Donald Trump in late 2019.
Once the resolution is adopted, the inquiry would go forward and allow for a full investigation into the charges against President Biden, and allow for witnesses to be called. The resolution would also set out the parameters of the House’s investigation and how the process would work.
The move marks a significant shift in Republican strategy. For months, Republican House and Senate leaders had refused to publicly comment on the Democratic-led inquiry without the formal resolution in place.
The resolution would also potentially pave the way for a contentious and possibly explosive debate over the House’s inquiry into President Biden, with the possibility of Democrats and Republicans clashing over the parameters of the resolution. It also remains to be seen how much support President Biden will garner from the Republican Party in the Senate should the matter reach that chamber.
In addition, the move will be seen as a major test for the House Democrats who are looking to move forward with their impeachment inquiry, signaling the seriousness with which the party looks to investigate and potentially remove the President from office.
Despite a tepid response from the White House, the Democratic-led House of Representatives is poised to hold President Biden accountable for any wrongdoings that may have occurred during his tenure in office. With a formal impeachment inquiry resolution up for vote soon, the House eagerly awaits the outcome and what the Republican-led Senate may have in store.
