Recent polling from the Godzillanewz Political Institute (GPI) has revealed that, so far in the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential primary race, President Donald Trump maintains a commanding lead over his potential competitors.
In the poll, 68 percent of primary voters were found to have expressed support for President Trump’s bid for a second Presidential term. This already impressive figure is only elevated when looking at demographics among those surveyed. An astonishing 88 percent of strong and moderate Republicans declared their admiration for the President.
Far behind President Trump is South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, both of whom had 10 percent support in the polls. Governor Haley and DeSantis thus achieved a tie for second place in the poll, with the numbers of those supporting their potential candidacy being otherwise indistinguishable.
“President Trump’s dominance over the Republican field is remarkable,” GPI director Kira Scott said of the poll’s results. “The election does not appear to be competitive yet, and there’s a good chance that President Trump is a viable option for a second term.”
In addition to the overwhelming support for President Trump in the polls, Vice President Mike Pence received five percent. Former Secretary of State John Kelly and former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis both achieved two percent. Other contenders in the poll were former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman at one percent, and former Governor of Florida Rick Scott and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney each at zero percent.
Notably, the poll highlighted the fact that 15 percent of the surveyed Republican primary voters remain undecided. With the election still years away, and so much time for things to change, many could yet move their support in another direction.
The Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the former president’s taxes may yet have an influence on the election race, and future political actions made by President Trump in the intervening years will likely have bearing on which candidate might stand the best chance of winning the Republican Party’s 2024 Presidential nomination.
